Authorship and Contributorship

Introduction

Clear and transparent authorship and contributorship practices are essential to ensure accountability and proper credit in scholarly publishing. The International Journal on Advanced Science, Engineering and Information Technology (IJASEIT) adopts policies that prevent unethical authorship practices, ensure fair attribution of work, and align with the COPE Core Practices and the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing.

Description

Authorship should reflect substantial scholarly contribution to a published work. IJASEIT defines authorship based on the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) criteria, which are widely accepted across disciplines. Misattributed authorship—such as gift, guest, or ghost authorship—undermines research integrity and trust in the academic record.

Contributorship recognizes that many individuals support the development of scholarly work without meeting the full criteria for authorship. Proper documentation of these contributions ensures transparency and acknowledgment of collaborative efforts.

Policy

  1. Criteria for Authorship
IJASEIT requires that all individuals listed as authors meet all the following criteria:

    • Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data

    • Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content

    • Final approval of the version to be published

    • Accountability for all aspects of the work, ensuring integrity and resolving any issues arising

  2. Author Contributions Statement
All submissions must include a detailed author contributions statement outlining the specific role of each author (e.g., data collection, writing, analysis, supervision). This information will be published with the article to promote transparency.

  3. Corresponding Author Responsibilities
    The corresponding author must:

    • Ensure that all listed authors meet the authorship criteria

    • Confirm that no one who meets the criteria has been omitted

    • Serve as the primary contact during the editorial process and after publication

    • Ensure all co-authors approve the final manuscript and agree to its submission

  4. Changes to Authorship
Any request to add, remove, or rearrange authors after manuscript submission must be accompanied by:

    • A written explanation from the corresponding author

    • Signed agreement from all listed authors, including those to be added or removed

Changes will not be accepted after acceptance unless required by a verified correction of the record.

  5. Contributorship and Acknowledgment
Individuals who contributed to the work but do not meet the criteria for authorship should be acknowledged appropriately in the acknowledgments section. Examples include:

    • Technical support

    • Statistical advice

    • Editorial assistance

Those acknowledged must give permission to be named, as acknowledgment may imply endorsement.

  6. Prohibited Practices
    IJASEIT strictly prohibits:

    • Guest authorship: adding an author with minimal or no contribution

    • Gift authorship: granting authorship as a favor or honor

    • Ghost authorship: omitting someone who made a qualifying contribution

  7. Dispute Resolution
Authorship disputes are the responsibility of the authors to resolve. If unresolved, IJASEIT may refer the matter to the relevant institutional or funding bodies. The journal does not arbitrate disputes but may withhold publication pending clarification.

  8. Continual Review
IJASEIT will regularly review this policy to align with evolving best practices and guidance from COPE, ICMJE, and WAME.
